Why I Choose To Live A “Boring” Life

Why treading the ordinary path leads to extraordinary inner worlds

“The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.” — Henry David Thoreau

That quote has always stuck with me. Am I living a life of quiet desperation by embracing the “boring”? Or is there wisdom in treading the well-worn path?

I’ll let you in on a secret: My “boring” life is an intricately choreographed dance between relishing the simple joys and grappling with existential angst that would make Nietzsche’s turtlenecked neck sweat.

Take last Tuesday for example.

I woke up at 6:03 am, stumbled to the kitchen, and diligently prepped my morning fuel (two scrambled eggs, avocado toast, black coffee — hold the touchy-feely adjectives). Glamorous, I know.

But then…the unexpected struck!

The dog didn’t want to be walked. Goose, my adorable labradoodle fur-tornado, simply refused to leave the couch’s siren call of cushiony comfort. We had a full-blown existential debate right there in the living room. Goose made some solid points about the futility of chasing squirrels and I…well I may have quoted Camus. It was deep.
