Ever since I got to Toronto, the Evergreen Brick Works was in my husband’s ‘to-show-Jiya’ list. And when we finally made the trip up there, I have to say I was very impressed.

Evergreen Brick Works is an erstwhile brick factory that has now become a hub of sustainability in Toronto. What used to be a massive complex of buildings that housed kilns and machinery is now host to a farmers’ market, cafes, a nursery, an outdoor school, exhibition spaces etc — all geared towards the ultimate goal of being a champion of sustainability. Needless to say, I fell in love.

So when friend and architect, Shruti Omprakash, principal of Drawing Hands Studio in Chennai, asked me if I wanted to write an article with her about cool urban spaces in Toronto for City Observer, an online journal, the answer was easy. Check this link for our article ‘The Forever Green Brickworks’ under the segment ‘On Location’. Its on Page 102.
