Letting a 3–8 year-old loose in the kitchen with flour, eggs and sugar? It sounds like a recipe for MESS. But also for fun. Baking is something that a lot of children love, not least because there’s an end product to munch.

With that in mind, here’s a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign that caught my attention today. It’s called Mini Bakers Club, and it’s the work of a company in London called BKD.

Its new club involves sending children a monthly themed box with crafting and baking tasks — as well as the necessary ingredients and decorations. Parents will pay £9.99 a month plus £1.99 postage here in the UK for the service.

“Boxes cover an array of STEAM based subjects such as Minibeast Adventures, Under the Sea and a Trip to the Big Top. Perfect for time poor parents looking for inspirational ways to entertain their children,” claims BKD in its Kickstarter pitch.

“Our boxes develop children’s fine and gross motor skills through baking and other activities like making sea creatures, going on minibeast hunts and learning how to juggle.”

It looks marvellous. There are various pledges, but the ones I’d pick out are £20 to get one box, a biscuit baking mix and a limited-edition apron; £35 for a three-month subscription plus the apron; and £125 for a year’s worth of boxes.

See the full list of options here. With 19 days to go, the campaign has currently raised £865 of its £3,000 goal.
