All of Contenda’s traditions… Ranked
We’re a pretty meme-y group of people, so we have a lot of weird traditions. Here they all are, ranked.
#1 Contenda Hack House Showdowns
Surprising absolutely nobody, Contenda Hack House Showdown is everyone’s favorite event. It’s a tournament style night filled with creative twists to existing video games, all culminating in a chance to win the glory of “The Belt”.
“The Belt” is simply a men’s small black belt that we found for $5 on Amazon. Some games we play include Guide Dog Mario Kart, Tandem Overwatch Death Match, and Chaos Golf with Friends.
A quick description of how to play each game:
Guide Dog Mario Kart
Split into teams of 2. One player blindfolds themselves (or closes their eyes if you trust them). The other player is their “Guide Dog”. They must tell their teammate how to drive. We usually play 4 teams in Battle Cup or Grand Prix.

Tandem Overwatch Death Match
Split into teams of 2. One player takes the keyboard and the other player takes the mouse. Get as many teams as you can make into an Overwatch Death Match lobby.

Chaos Golf with Friends
Golf with Friends lobby, but random ball shape and ball size. Every person for themselves.
#2 Contenda Jeopardy
You can probably already tell we’re big gamers. Contenda Jeopardy is a trivia game (questions curated and hosted by yours truly) where everyone wins a prize! Categories of questions are:
- Company History
- Fundraising
- Engineering
- Product
- People & Culture
At our first birthday party, we gave out everything from a Nintendo Switch to a burrito blanket. It’s a great way to tell old and new stories.
#3 Office Trivia
There’s a wall in the office dedicated to that month’s trivia question. The trivia question is done in a “Name as many as you can” open-ended format. They range in topics like “African Geography” to “AWS Services”.
I made up a bunch of AWS services and mixed in real ones with it. How many can you correctly identify?
