🔥 Polycule chaos: Phoebe Bridgers, Bo Burnham, and Matt Healy

Why we still love TikTok “day in my life” vids

It made sense, in the early days of the pandemic, when “day in my life” videos first got popular, that we were all overly curious about the minute-by-minute, hour-by-hour happenings of people’s everyday lives.

Young tech workers with too many benefits, private chefs for Hamptons-based families, It Girls exercising their socialite status in Miami and NYC, med school students recording 8 hours of themselves studying at home, American Psycho-esque consulting dudes in Chicago, digital nomads stuck wherever they were because of COVID restrictions, unhoused people taking it day-by-day, the average Joe just trying to understand the news and going through the motions of a confusing time.

Those are just the ones I remember from the pandemic. Now dial that up a hundred times, because we’re out and about again. Traveling, working, socializing, living.

And the people who make these videos are so fascinating because they range from the least self-aware individuals to ever exist (ex. the socialites, the overprivileged tech workers) to the more genuine (ex. those sharing how they adapt to life with disabilities, those working very regular jobs in very regular places).

So much of a day in the life, obviously, depends on one’s career—which is why so many of these videos share the same format: “a day in the life of a ___”. Fill in the blank with a job title.

Aren’t you curious about what a day in the life of a neurosurgeon is like? Or a local politician? Or an Instagram model? Or a cross-country truck driver?

The vibes vary. It ranges from countryside farmers with an appreciation for a small and quiet life, to minor league athletes flexing their wealth and their looks. It can be a very faithful look at a 14-hour time span—or a heavily romanticized version.

Will we ever get tired of peeking into someone else’s life, whether it’s an honest representation or not? I don’t really think so. It’s human curiosity at its most real.

Are superhero movies losing juice? Or is it just DC?

Over the past month, we found out that Wonder Woman 3, Superman, and Black Adam all got kicked to the curb at DC.

As Deadline reports, filmmakers James Gunn and Peter Safran have been tasked to shake up the DC Universe and have now scrapped several ideas from the past administration.

While the Wonder Woman franchise could continue, Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot will no longer be part of it. Same for Superman and Henry Cavill. On the other hand, while Henry’s Superman and Gal’s Wonder Woman were popular at the box office, The Rock’s Black Adam didn’t hit expectations in theaters.

So, what exactly are these plans for DC? It feels like Marvel’s glory days are certainly over post-Avengers. Note: I say that now but may be wrong in about a decade. Who knows. But are superheroes ~over~ as a whole? Auteur filmmakers have complained about their dominance in the industry and in theaters. Some of the concepts are getting either old or too complex for audiences.

I appreciated Marvel’s Avengers, especially early Iron Man and Captain America. But… it’s all a bit tired now. Could DC revive the superhero movie?

Hollywood’s first public throuple?

Let me get the confirmed details out of the way before jumping into theory:

  • Beloved indie singer Phoebe Bridgers is (was?) engaged to Irish actor Paul Mescal, who she thirsted after publically before finally dating him. Their coupleship has a large fandom itself.
  • Singer-comedian-performer Bo Burnham has been with his non-famous girlfriend for nearly a decade. He dedicated his popular pandemic-era film/music/art piece, “Inside”, to her.
  • The 1975 lead singer Matt Healy, who I wrote about yesterday, has been hanging out a lot with both and givin’ smooches. See: this Instagram pic of Phoebe and Matt smooching, pushed together by Bo.
  • Phoebe and Bo have been spotted many times now over the past month or so at concerts, bars, and even at Kate Berlant’s one-woman show in NYC, which happens to be produced/directed by Bo. Supposedly, they’ve been canoodling!

To sum it up: Oh god, a Bridgers-Burnham-Healy throuple!

Deux Moi reported via rumors that Paul Mescal has indeed called off his engagement to Phoebe, because I’m sure this is all very weird and embarassing for him.

There were theories that Phoebe and Paul were in an open relationship, but… Paul doesn’t seem the type? What do I know, though. It’s Hollywood, baby.

And I have no doubt Matt Healy would be down for a throuple situation. Polyamory is ~so in~ right now. Just ask the FTX crypto polycule or the new season of Gossip Girl.

And that’s it for today! Thank you for reading! I love you! See you tomorrow.

Cheers,
Casey
