SNL: Pete Davidson, Ice Spice, and Bad Bunny

Saturday Night Live returns on October 14th (the WGA strike just ended, and hopefully SAG soon) with a familiar favorite: yup, it’s Pete Davidson.

You hadn’t heard his name in… maybe a week? So there you go. No shocker there. He left the show as a main cast member in 2022, and SNL loves to bring back former cast members as hosts. Like him or not, Pete Davidson drew viewers to the nearly fifty-year-old show.

And the musical performer for the 49th season premiere? New York’s very own Ice Spice. LFG.

Then, the next week, Bad Bunny will be both hosting and performing. Don’t be surprised — he’s got acting credits up his sleeve. Personally, I thought he was great in action-dramedy Bullet Train.

As usual, I won’t tune in live but I’ll watch clips on YouTube after.

Love Island Games contestants revealed

The Love Island Games start soon, and some of your faves made the cut.

Scott from Season 10 of Love Island UK… do you have a home?! What is this guy’s deal? He’s now spent the past four months on Love Island UK, Love Island USA, and now Love Island Games. Extremely desperate behavior, very cringe.

Some legendary characters from the UK series will also be making an appearance:

Sorry, but I don’t know any of the USA/France/Germany contestants, so I don’t have much to say on those picks.

But my goodness, the selection of UK is fantastic. The fact that Maura Higgins is the social ambassador for it… and could have to interview Curtis… thrilling.

Oh, you wanted to know what the Love Island Games actually are? From the press release:

In this new format, romance will meet reality as fan-favorite Islanders are faced with both team and couples’ challenges, all while navigating dating, eliminations, recoupling, dramatic arrivals, and new competition twists and turns that help control the game like never before.

So… messy messy!

Trailers: ‘Priscilla’ and ‘The Buccaneers’

The trailer for Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla dropped yesterday and it’s so good. The movie follows not Elvis but Priscilla, his long-suffering lover. It stars Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi as Priscilla and Elvis, which might just be perfect casting. Austin Butler whoooo?

It’s not going to paint the prettiest picture of Elvis. Because the reality is: she was only 14 years old when he groomed her to be his wife. Every detail of the film will be important, because it’s Sofia Coppola.

Next up is something unexpected — a new Apple TV+ series called The Buccaneers. It’s got the unabashed fun of Bridgerton, but it’s much more mature and full of depth. At least… by the looks of the trailer. Star-crossed romance? Check. Period piece? Check. Beautiful cinematography, hot love interests, and a banger Olivia Rodrigo song for the trailer? Check, check, check.

Unfortunately, I may have to get Apple TV+ again.

Book review: The God of Endings

Finish your current book. Then pick this one up before October ends. Because The God of Endings is the perfect October book.

It’s got it all: breathtaking prose, dark academia, New England countryside, Romanian witches, vampires with insatiable appetites, complex family trauma, plenty of suspense, fine art, a touch of supernatural deities, vivid imagery, memorable characters, and a beautiful climax.

The big question remains. Is life a gift or a curse? This complex novel won’t give you an answer, but it’ll provide a fascinating perspective from the undead.

Not into fantasy or the supernatural? Honestly, neither am I. Except for this one book. It’s hard to believe it’s the author’s debut—everything feels so right, so whimsical, so well-plotted. The story will leave you with a sense that you know these characters, their pasts and their futures. Every time you might think a thread of the plot is pointless, it’s woven into the main storyline spectacularly. Multiple timelines were never an issue, because our main character has led so much life (ironically) that you can never guess what she does next over the course of a century.

Certainly a five-star book, and certainly one of the best I’ve read this year. Read it before autumn passes.
