A record month at The Local

2016 has gotten off to a smashing start here at The Local: we set a new record for unique monthly visitors in January — 5.4 million!

As my colleague, Managing Editor (and Co-Founder) James Savage explains:

more people than ever are coming to us for news and analysis from around Europe

While The Local is built as a network of ‘local’ news sites for the countries we cover, the majority of readers for any site are outside that country, reflecting the fact that “in an interconnected world, people are thirsting to know what’s happening well beyond their own back yards”. As James puts it:

it’s far from just expats (or inpats, if you like) who want to know what’s going on in our nine countries: most readers on our French site are not in France and most readers of thelocal.se are not in Sweden.

Increasingly, The Local is how ‘local’ stories from the countries we cover (from the bizarre to the tragic) reach the wider world — and within a context for understanding and interpreting what’s going on that only a steady flow of daily news can provide. It’s that same context that ensures readers engage with the sponsored content we produce for clients: their message is delivered as a natural part of a country’s narrative and to an audience that is actively seeking news and information about that country.

So, to James and the rest of The Local’s editorial team, keep up the great work! Can’t wait to see what the next month will bring.
