Writers Deserve Answers, Not Just Glitches and Low Earnings
Medium’s Revenue Model: A New Year, Old Questions
It is the beginning of a new year, and as a Medium writer, I was expecting a fresh start like many of my fellow writers.
But what has happened so far is a big blow instead of a bang.
There is complete chaos on Medium at the moment, with writers wondering how Medium really makes its revenue.
And frankly, it is hard not to blame them.
Low EPR (earnings per read) has left creators confused, pondering whether it’s all that effort and time put into penning stories in the first place.
Medium’s revenue distribution system seems like a puzzle.
The platform mainly generates revenue from memberships, and as writers, we earn our share of the revenue based on how much time members spend reading our work.
Sounds fair enough on paper, right? But it gets murky from here—glitches, fluctuating EPRs, and the general sense of instability keep shaking our trust.
The ad-free vision of Medium is quite commendable, no doubt. It makes it different from platforms with numerous pop-ups and distractions.
