When you learn content marketing, you learn about how important your audience is for you. Your content is written for people and for which people? They’re called your target audience.

You write for them and solve their issues through your content. That makes your content and marketing relevant to people.

And there comes the first step of understanding your audience. You can’t move the needle without knowing who you’re selling your services or products to.

For example, if you’re a relationship coach for newlyweds, dating advice might not be relevant to ‘your’ audience. That makes all the sense to think about who you want to sell so that you can create content based on your audience’s interests.

You can write the best content in the world, but if your audience can’t relate to it or doesn’t find it useful, it’s just another piece of content on the internet.

How do you find your audience? By following the steps below:

  1. Create Audience Personas

Think about your ideal customers — everything about their likes and dislikes. Then build a profile by using basic details like age, job, relationship status, etc.

For example, if you’re a relationship coach, one persona could be a 35-year-old married woman looking to improve communication with her spouse while advancing in her career.

2. Use Data

You can also use your website data and socials to know about who interacts with your content more.

For example, focus on content like ‘Balancing Marriage and Career’ if your audience is mainly women in their 30s struggling with balancing both.

3. Ask Directly

Use surveys or social media polls to ask your audience what they want to see. For example, “What’s your biggest challenge in maintaining a healthy relationship?”

Pain Points: Identify your audience’s challenges. If they struggle with trust issues in their relationship, create content like “5 Steps to Fixing Trust in Your Marriage.”

Language and Tone: Speak their language. If your audience is young, professional couples, keep your tone modern and relatable.

When writing content for your audience, don’t try to make guesses. Instead, use data or ask or observe them directly to know what they care about the most.

  • Plus, write for a specific audience, not everyone. You have better chances of making an impact if you target one specific audience.

Takeaway

Know everything about your audience and keep updating your knowledge because it’s not a one-time thing.
