With the gig economy growing at an outstanding rate and also with the flexibility of working remoting improving everyday, working as a contractor could be more in vogue and also normal in the coming future. Not only has technology made a lot of improvements in terms of computing power and amount of data that can be stored in different cloud environments. Technology has also created a user interface and experience where the idea of people working at one location or company doesn’t matter anymore. With the changes coming to the workplace few companies are realizing that by hiring contractors and utilizing technology, a successful business can be built.

Reason

Competition has been growing faster and the rate of progress in technology has never been faster in our lifetime. It is getting hard to keep up with advances in technology and also talent to harness those technologies to add business value to companies. So how does a small business keep up with these advances while maintaining their business operations. Hiring consultants might be the solution for this problem. Hiring consultants can bring in domain expertise and years of experience for a high price however, bringing in outside talent can help in reducing the time in implementing new advances in technology while making it easy for you to run your business.

Drawbacks

Like everything in life drawbacks exists when hiring contractors. One of the biggest drawbacks could be intellectual property theft. Contractors are not always obligated to restrictions when working on certain aspects of a business because maybe the use cases are generic. One way to avoid theft of intellectual property is to have contractors sign NDA. This could help with restricting contractors from working with your competitors however most contractors may not be open to signing an NDA. Another drawback could be in price tags for hiring contractors. Contractors don’t come cheap especially if the skills required are rare and high in demand.

Benefits

As stated above hiring contractors can help speed up your implementations of implementing new technologies. Also a good part about hiring contractors is that you can evaluate a candidate based on their skills and their culture fit. This should not be used as an excuse to abuse a hire with poor working conditions and unrealistic expectations. When looking for contractors, try to think long term so you can build a relationship that might last for a long time.
