When looking to contract for companies or companies looking for contractors. It helps to understand the positions that are most likely to be contracted. The reason behind this is that it makes it easy to target your ideal candidate or business. Once you know your target, the chances are higher of your focusing your time and resources to get the best outcome. That being the case, in the tech community, due to the advances in tools, techniques and platforms, certain positions are mostly suited for contractors or companies. Most of these jobs have correlations with being dispensable jobs, however in corporate America, what job isn’t dispensable

Sales Reps

Sales can be considered an art and most recently a science. A lot of companies tend to hire sales staff when trying to gain traction, promote a new project or just improve sales. It is important to know what sales has tremendous value to companies, however most jobs in sales can have short term lifespan when a process has been set or a goal has been attained. That being the case, one shouldn’t be afraid to job into the sales bandwagon. Not only is it lucrative, if you are a people person, you get to interact with people from different areas in life. This could also help when you are looking for your next contract position after you got laid off from your previous contracting job. 😊

Recruiters

Recruiting like sales can be instrumental for companies trying to find talent to grow their business, promote a new project or venture into a new field. It helps to be associated with the right people when you are in the recruiting industry. A good recruiter can be a treasure for most companies or an expensive waste of time. When companies are trying to expand into a new field or gain new talent, it helps to have the right recruiters so make this endeavor successful. Like sales, after companies have reached a goal or built a process, recruiters tend to be very replaceable. A company can only hire some many people, so recruiters tend to be used mostly as contractors for temp positions. Recruiting can also be a good side hustle for people with deep networks on domain expertise.

Turnover specialist

This is a niche field mostly designated to companies looking to transition from technology paradigm to another. Turnover specialist might not be the most technical in general, however they can act as solutions architects to help companies move operations, processes and technologies from one paradigm to the next. A turnover specialist is “THE CONSULTANT” because most turnover specialist tend to have industry level experience and foresight.

Designers

Apple showed us that design is more important now than ever when it comes to how a business works and operates. It helps to have a good design language when a business is trying to display a message, explain a process or implement a vision. That being the case, for most businesses, after a design language has been created, it rarely makes sense for a designer to be part of the team. Also, designers enjoy creating new things when they can. Expect if the pay is good and the designer is comfortable, most designers will rather go somewhere else for new challenges. The beauty of being a designer is that, you can have a public portfolio to show clients and this can be huge when getting contracts.

Developer

Developers, developers, developers. Developers in most cases can be the biggest assets to a company or the biggest liability to a company. Well probably exaggerating however developers right now (2010 till until tech becomes more commoditized and people use simple processes so probably never) are the rock stars in the technology industry. When it comes implementing technologies, optimizing processes and scaling infrastructure, developers are becoming important now more than ever. Also, once a company has figured out their secret sauce and optimized certain principles, developers might not be that valuable anymore. Also, developers like designers can get bored so most like contracting so they can build new things over time.

Tech writers

Tech writers might be one of the most important jobs in technology. As companies embrace open source and built tools to be used by other companies, having a tech writer to communicate concepts to the market or customer base will become important. Tech writers combine a mix of skills in writing, technology and to some degree sales. Also, not every company will need an in house tech writer for their products. Large companies might need to contract tech writers when launching a new product to make deadlines. Small companies might need contractor’s tech writers to help with releases however an in house tech writer might be expensive.

New Hype specialist

Technology is full of noises. Most technologies have huge potentials, most are just noise or might not live up to their potential. You have a lot of people who are “visionaries” or leading experts who in some cases have good intuition and in some cases, are just lucky. These are the contractors who are more of sales people than anything else.

This is just might thoughts on the contracting landscape. Take with a grain of salt, pepper, sugar and chocolate.
