Why You Need Contracts, Law & More

Hiring a lawyer to ensure your contracts are legally sound and protect your interests, although prudent, is often too great a financial burden for the majority of small businesses and individuals. With lawyers charging a median rate in the neighborhood of $350 per hour, it’s not difficult to understand why.

I started Contracts, Law & More to provide an affordable way for small businesses, startups and individuals to obtain useful legal advice without having to sacrifice quality. Initially the focus will be on commercial contract law. However, the plan is to hire more lawyers with various expertise and expand into other areas of the law.

You might be thinking, “the only way to reduce the cost of legal advice is to hire lawyers who are less competent”. If Contracts, Law & More was a traditional law firm operating the way most firms do, I would agree. However, it is not a traditional law firm and it does not operate like one.

Contracts, Law & More operates as a ‘virtual’ company with the following philosophy:

  1. With almost 100,000 lawyers in Canada, there are at least a couple hundred smart, capable, experienced lawyers who would be happy to trade in a bit of salary for a more flexible schedule, better lifestyle, and greater mobility.
  2. For many legal services it is not advantageous to meet clients in person. Online video calls and other forms of communication work just as well. This shaves costs by as much as 20%: 8–10% for office space and 8–12% in travel time to and from the office, and to and from clients.
  3. With the hundreds of millions of dollars pouring into team collaboration technology over the past few years, it is not nearly as helpful, if at all, for coworkers and clients to be in the same room. Believe it or not, there have been times when I have been in the same office as a coworker collaborating on a document, using two computers, sitting across the desk from one another. We could just as well have been in different cities.
  4. Small businesses seldom have the highly complex legal matters that require the most expensive lawyers in the country. Typically, all that is required is quality legal advice from a smart, capable lawyer with several years’ experience.
