Week 250: A Simmering Stew

Sometimes a slight twist on an old recipe does the trick…

Each Sunday, my wife and I cook and eat a meal together — intentionally. Every Friday, I’ll be sharing our experience here in this space. I want to see the growth that will come in our marriage because of this. I hope you enjoy our story. You can find last week’s post here.

I’m writing this to you on Christmas Day. It’s been quite a bit different than Christmases past. Sarah and I have been home. We did not have a big family gathering as usual. There are no pithy sayings or cute metaphors to get around it — this year has been hard. It’s been hard in large and small ways for all of us. And that really hits home during the holidays. There is no way around it. And yet, time marches on, as they say.

These Cooking With Sarah posts are always written looking back. Sometimes the recipe from a few weeks prior is memorable and sometimes I have to strain to pull out the story. Other times, as on this occasion, the recipe seems to have a unique message for me. My hope, as it is every week, is to jot it down in such a way that it has some impact for you, too. I may not succeed in that, but I will try.

That’s all any of us can really do these days, isn’t it? Try. There is so much beyond our control. So much going wrong. But we can get up…
