Week 287: An Act of Hope
Enjoying the fruits — rather, the vegetables — of our labor…
Each Sunday, my wife and I cook and eat a meal together — intentionally. Every Friday, I’ll be sharing our experience here in this space. I want to see the growth that will come in our marriage because of this. I hope you enjoy our story. You can find last week’s post here.
It found its place in the soil. Here I was planting seeds again — this time, zucchini. They dropped one after another out of my hand and one snuggled right into place. I smoothed a light dusting of soil back over them, watered them in, and the process began.
By process, I mean something working within myself more than anything happening in that bit of soil.
Planting seeds is an act of hope. You do a small task with the idea that months later it will reap benefits. It is inherently optimistic and a reminder of the virtue of patience. More than that, it’s a reminder of the virtue of taking each present moment on its own. Step by step. Day by day.
I planted those zucchini seeds months earlier. Then, a week before this Sunday, I picked a large zucchini. I had actually wanted to pick it much earlier, but encouraged me to leave it on the vine. She was right, and now we had a massive zucchini to prepare. Decision time.
