9 ingredients that will make your baking healthy!

Baking is a science and a lot of it is a matter of trial and error, but when it comes to finding out what does and doesn’t work your oven and a bit of research comes in handy.

When you first hear it, it sounds like satire right?.How can baking be healthy?

Healthy baking is means less fat thereby reducing calories and baking more nutritiously.

After the festive season and lots of calories gain from making merry with our families , we go back to a strict diet and for the new year resolution!

Cookpad Kenya brings to you a two weeks healthy baking exercise with the mission to promote healthy baking to enhance everyday cooking!

Here are some of the tips on healthy baking.

1.Oils instead of butter

Butter and coconut are saturated oil, try using unsaturated oils like sunflower oil, canola oil and olive oil to give light and moist mixture.

2.Use Applesauce instead of oils

Use ¾ a cup of applesauce for every 1 cup of oil a recipe calls for.

Combine one apple with a splash of lemon juice

3.Avocado

The healthy fat can be used in place of butter for cakes, brownies, and other baked products. Avocado van also be used in frosting process.This is the perfect chance to increase protein and get some additional nutrients in your body without risking any flavors. The smooth texture gives these treats that a luxurious consistency that your taste buds will love.

4.Egg less bakes

Eggs work to bind baked foods that also give rise to the producsEgg replacement works for recipes that require upto 3 eggs.

Here are the two ways :

4.1.Mashed banana
Simply mash 1/2 a medium sized ripe banana and use that in place of one egg.

4.2.Chia seeds
Mix 1 tablespoon of chia seeds with 3 tablespoons of water and allow to stand until they are the same type of consistency as egg white.

5.Fruits and vegetable.

Yes fruits and vegetables!When you add this to your baking,beetroot and carrots are sweet vegetables also fruits like banana, apples and berries it means you add less sugar.They add fiber and sweetness also keep your cake moist.

6.Natural sugar

One way of reducing sugar is use fruits which are sweet. Another way is use of natural sugar like honey to replace the normal white sugar.Others include maple syrup, agave, coconut sugar or dates

7.Use whole meal flour

Replace your white flour which undergoes so much refining process with wholegrain flour which has higher fiber content.This may give a denser texture though bit soft examples include Sorghum and oats

8.Make your own flour

You can make your own flour; oat, flax and nut flour using a food processor or a blender.Blend it till it becomes fine powder,this way you are using whole ingredients.

9.Swap in Beans

Beans and baking? Yes for sure you skip the flour with chickpeas or black peas.In this manner you go for wholesome ingredients which are nutritious. When making a brownie, blend all the ingredients in your recipe including cleaned and drained black beans.
