Giving Tuesday is approaching, get ahead of your give-back plan

The holiday season is around the corner! The best thing that you can do to get into the giving spirit this holiday season is to plan ahead for how you’d like to donate.

Giving Tuesday, which falls on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, is a special day that was started in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation to encourage people to give back in whatever ways they can. Giving Tuesday also kickstarts the most popular time of year of charitable giving, with nearly ⅓ of all donations gifted in December.

So, if you’re looking to get involved with your local nonprofits, but don’t know where to start… check out a few creative options below.

1. Cook and deliver a cozy meal

We hear from Copia followers all the time asking, “how can we help donate food?” While Copia is currently working by connecting businesses to nonprofits, that doesn’t mean you can’t get involved with your local nonprofits on your own! Call the nonprofit and offer to sponsor a meal for their residents or community.

2. Holiday decorating

Help your local nonprofit organizations by becoming the town holiday cheermeister! Get in the holiday spirit by offering to donate and decorate their spaces with jingle bells, twinkling lights, garlands, and more.

3. Donate your skills

If you have a knack for gardening or landscaping, check to see if a local nonprofit can use help fixing up their exteriors. You might also be able to help spruce a few things up with your maintenance skills. A little can go a long way!

4. Share your knowledge

Are you a fitness instructor, a tech pro, or maybe bilingual? Offer to do a lunch and learn, teach yoga and stretching, basic cell phone tips, or an ESL class. Your creativity and skills can help engage with and build confidence for your community members in need.

5. Toys, gift bags, jackets + coats… oh my!

Many nonprofits have a large community of children who are eager to receive toys around the holidays. Other important and commonly needed goods that you might want to donate include hygiene kits and warm outerwear.

Many nonprofit organizations will list their specific holiday needs on their websites — so be sure to check there first!

At Copia, our mission is to inspire communities to share their surplus and abundance with all.

Happy Holidays and happy giving, from the Copia team!
