Copia, the technology platform that enables businesses to track and reduce food waste while also safely donating their edible excess food to communities in need, is proud to join as one of the founding partners of the Intuit Climate Action Marketplace, an initiative of Intuit Inc.

Food serving businesses of all sizes, including restaurants, hotels, hospitals, corporate cafeterias, and others use Copia’s technology to understand overproduction trends and reduce surplus over time while ensuring that their excess food is used to its highest and best potential — to feed people rather than landfills. Copia has saved nearly 5M pounds of edible food for food services businesses across the US. By diverting this surplus food from landfills, these businesses have saved 22.4M pounds of carbon emission from our atmosphere, saved 495M gallons of water, and fed millions of people facing food insecurity. Additionally, by donating through Copia, businesses have recouped over $15M in enhanced tax deductions. Copia’s triple bottom line framework supports people, planet, and profit.

According to a recent QuickBooks survey, 75% of small businesses believe environmental sustainability is important for the future and 97% of small businesses would like to take action in the future to be more environmentally responsible.¹ The Intuit Climate Action Marketplace is a one-stop-shop for sustainability solutions for small businesses. “We are committed to empowering our small business community to make a measurable, positive impact on the environment, and become more resilient to a changing planet. Climate change is a palpable issue, and Intuit is perfectly positioned to connect key climate partners directly with small business owners, self-employed individuals, and entrepreneurs,” said Cassie Divine, Intuit Senior Vice President of QuickBooks Online. The Intuit Marketplace allows small businesses to take immediate action to replace high carbon-emission activities with more sustainable solutions like food waste management.

“Businesses have enough on their plates already, so making it as easy as possible to do the right thing is why we (Copia) are so proud to be a founding partner with Intuit’s Climate Action Marketplace,” says Kimberly Smith, Copia’s Chief Growth Officer. “Copia’s technology is taking the friction out of implementing a food donation system and, in doing so, making systematic improvements in reducing food waste, eliminating hunger, and creating social equity and environmental change.”

Copia allows business owners to see a significant financial return on investment while doing the right thing for the planet and their communities. Under the CARES Act, businesses can write off approximately two times their cost of food — up to 25% of their total income. In 2021 thus far, Copia customers have already seen an average of over $20,000 in tax deductions per location. Additionally, Copia helps businesses meet and provide State legislative compliance such as California’s SB-1383 or NYS Food Waste/Scraps Law without stress.

Through Intuit’s Climate Action Marketplace, small businesses are provided a simplified path to take climate action. Today’s consumers are more conscious than ever about aligning their purchasing decisions to their values, especially at the local level. Copia provides businesses with a 360 view analysis of their social and environmental impact to help attract new customers and make a real impact on their local communities.
