From the viewpoint of someone with mental and physical disabilities, including chronic anxiety and depression.

Capitalism Through the Eyes of the Vulnerable

For those of us with physical or mental disabilities, this capitalistic society often feels exclusionary and harsh. The system values productivity and efficiency, which can negatively impact those whose disabilities affect their work ability. This not only creates financial instability but can also deepen feelings of isolation and worthlessness, intensifying mental health struggles like anxiety and depression.

Psychological Impact

From a psychological standpoint, the capitalist emphasis on constant achievement and material success can be extremely damaging. It may trigger or worsen anxiety and depression, particularly in those already dealing with mental health issues. The pressure to compete and succeed in such an environment can be a source of continuous and chronic stress, exacerbating existing conditions and leading to a cycle of mental distress.

Trauma-Informed Perspective

At the very least, a trauma-informed approach recognizes that these systemic pressures can be and are often traumatic. It understands that continuous stress from economic pressures and social exclusion can lead to long-term psychological harm. A new perspective is called for which advocates for systems that acknowledge the varied experiences of individuals, especially those with mental and physical challenges.

Inclusive Capitalism?

A solution lies in shaping a more inclusive form of capitalism. This approach would:

  1. Honor Diversity: Recognize that people have wildly different abilities and circumstances. Policies and practices should absolutely reflect this diversity.
  2. Support Systems: Strengthen support for those who cannot engage in traditional work expectations. This includes financial, medical, and psychological support.
  3. True Mental Health Awareness: Promote a comprehensive mental health awareness in workplaces and communities, making sure that the pressures of capitalism do not exacerbate or create mental health issues.

We’re passed due to create a society where everyone, regardless of their abilities or mental health status, can find a place to thrive. The time is now.
