Brief Intro

This is the third instalment of the series in which I’m trying to show you something that has completely transformed my perspective on political and economic life; not only as something only angry people argue about, or rich people manipulate, but as the evolution of human thought over time. The philosophical context out of which you, in all your magnificent complexity in the present day, have emerged to value what it is you value.

So far we have looked at 15th Century feudalism (from the word ‘feif’ meaning land or property) and how, out of that state of dismal public authority and intense curtailment on freedom, the ideals of democracy were reborn and liberalism took hold, with the intent to empower everyone by forgoing restriction.

Liberalism took off economically as trade gave wealth and power — previously only held by monarchs, lords and the church — to individuals, merchants and nations. We’re now moving into…
