Yoga at Home: Start Your Free and Flexible Self-Practice

As a yoga teacher and enthusiast, I own several yoga mats and pants, yoga blocks, knee pads, and a meditation pillow. But, truth be told, you need none of these things to start doing yoga. For several years after starting my regular yoga practice several years ago, I owned one pair of leggings and a used yoga mat — and mostly did yoga from home.

Let’s face it: Yoga classes can be expensive, and you may only have time and energy for a 15-minute sequence, not a 60-minute class.

The following guide will help you start your yoga routine at home — without typical yoga equipment. All you need is an internet connection and a roof over your head, or a patch of grass under your feet.

Why should I start doing yoga (at home)?

There is no single right answer to this, but here is part of my motivation: First, yoga makes me feel good. I’m rarely tense in my neck, I have a good posture despite working in an office, and I enjoy challenges like learning the forearm stand. The yogic mindset also encourages me to accept that difficult times will come and go.
