As a writer, you face the daunting task of finding innovative ways to captivate your audience and keep them engaged.

One effective technique you might not have tried yet is using bucket brigades.

In this article, we’ll explore how they work and why they’re so effective in creating compelling content.

What are Bucket Brigades?

Bucket brigades are writing techniques used to connect paragraphs seamlessly.

The name has an interesting backstory.

According to the Benjamin Franklin Historic Society, the term originated from the Union Fire Company, also known as the “Bucket Brigade,” co-founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1736.

This writing technique is called a Bucket Brigade because it resembles a line of people passing buckets to put out a fire — each sentence builds on the previous one, creating a continuous flow of ideas.

How Do Bucket Brigades Work?

Unlike transitional words like “however” and “moreover,” bucket brigades are colloquial transitional phrases that help link ideas.

When applied to your writing, these phrases create a smooth and logical flow, making your writing more cohesive and engaging.

By using bucket brigades, you can build momentum, keep readers interested, create a clear sense of direction, and provide a logical structure to connect ideas.

Examples of Bucket Brigades

Here are some examples (the bucket brigade phrases are bold while the sentence you might write after it is in italics.)

Using Bucket Brigades in Your Writing

Remember, moderation is key. Use bucket brigades to:

  • Connect disconnected ideas
  • Create a sense of flow when transitioning to a new idea
  • Link paragraphs that don’t naturally follow each other

Avoid repetition by varying your bucket brigades, and read your work aloud to ensure they’re in the right place.
