As a copywriter, you excel at crafting words that persuade people to buy things.

But, are you effective at selling yourself?

Most copywriters, including myself, struggle to promote their own services.

It’s time to change that.

I learned how to enhance my self-promotion skills by following suggestions from my friend, Joe.

Joe Rigoll ghostwrote books for his clients, but his name was unknown.

He realized he needed to build his own brand, connect with business professionals who wanted to share their story, and market himself online.

Now, after taking a few marketing courses on self-promotion, he secures high-paying clients and projects he loves.

Build Your Personal Brand

Your personal brand is like a reputation.

It’s what people think of when they hear your name.

Here’s what Joe suggested I do to build my personal brand, which I’m now passing on to you:

  • Find your niche: Identify what you excel at, like writing for a specific industry or creating engaging social media content.
  • Create a unique value proposition: Clearly define what sets you apart from other writers, like your unique voice or expertise.
  • Make a professional website and portfolio: Showcase your work and skills on a website that looks professional and is easy to navigate.
  • Use a consistent tone and voice: Sound like yourself in all your writing, so people get to know your personality and style.

Network and Make Connections

I found networking difficult too, until Joe reframed it by suggesting that networking is like making friends in your industry.

When done right, it can lead to new clients and projects.

Here’s how to network:

  • Attend writing conferences and events: Meet other writers, agents, and potential clients in person.
  • Join online writing groups and forums: Connect with other writers and industry experts online.
  • Connect with important people on social media: Follow and engage with influencers and potential clients on platforms like Twitter and LinkedIn.
  • Write guest posts and collaborate with other writers: Build relationships and get your name out there by writing for other websites and collaborating on projects.

Market Yourself Online

Next, Joe told me to think of online marketing as putting up a sign that says, “I’m a great copywriter!”

So, to market yourself online:

  • Write blog posts and guest posts: Share your expertise and showcase your writing skills on your own blog and other websites.
  • Use social media to promote your work: Engage with your audience on platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, and Facebook.
  • Build an email list and send newsletters: Keep in touch with potential clients and other writers by sending regular updates about your work.
  • Use basic search engine optimization (SEO) techniques: Help people find your website by using keywords and phrases they might search for.

Take Action

Don’t hide behind your writing. Promote yourself and get the recognition you deserve. If you need help, connect with me on LinkedIn and ask me any questions.
