Sending DMs to potential clients can be overwhelming. Especially after getting rejected several times. It makes you feel less worthy, and sometimes, if you don’t handle it properly, self-doubt starts to creep in.

Below, you’ll be learning how to send DMs to your ICP and get them to say yes to you every time. Let’s start by analyzing what you’ve been doing wrong.

Random salutations — Your target audience is everyday people like you who’ve got meetings to attend, to-do lists to fulfill, work to do, and so on. And the last thing they want to deal with is a random message saying “hi” in their DM.

Like everyone else, these kinds of messages annoy them. And of course, you won’t get a reply. This is because they might find it polite but you’ve not given them a reason to reply to you yet.

Being generic — Telling your target client you can do something is another reason you get ignored. Believe me, they’ve gotten tons of such messages that promise them they can do something for them.

Their DMs are humming with lots of such messages, you don’t want to be another pain in the neck.

The main problem is they don’t know who to trust to deliver or who is even worthy of their time. If your message is generic and sounds like what every other Tom’s out there, you stand a chance of getting ignored.

Lack of confidence — Trust me, clients can tell when you’re not confident, and they don’t even have to be physically present to decipher this. They can smell a lack of confidence or uncertainty from afar.

And it’s only a matter of time before they withdraw and start ignoring you all over again.

Desperation — This is another factor that can cause your target client to ignore you. If your body language reeks of desperation, there’s a high chance you’ll get ignored.

A desperate creator or digitally skilled person would go to any length to make money off a client. They usually don’t care if they do the job right or not, or if their client is satisfied or not.

Most of your ICPs wouldn’t like to take chances if they find out you’re only about how much you can make off them and not necessarily about how you can help them solve their problem.

Building a fake relationship — Most creators try to build relationships to break their target audience’s defense wall. This is understandable as gurus have strongly advised against pitching immediately as this is a big turn-off to your ideal client.

True, it is, but a bigger turn-off would be building a relationship solely for the reason of selling to them later.

This is the height of ingenuity. If you’re going to build a relationship first with your target client, that’s okay, but ensure you do so genuinely.

Besides that it’s a little hypocritical to start something with someone with the end goal of getting something from them, a solid personal brand is not built off of taking; it’s built off of giving.

What you should do instead

This is where the juice is, so you might want to pay extra attention to this.

Sending random DMs to your ideal client with the hope that they’d find you interesting to work with won’t work. If it had ever worked for you before, it was simply luck. Most ideal clients want a bit more details of how you can help them than a random “hello there”.

Finding your target audience — The first step is finding your ideal client (a perfect fit for your services). Being sure that someone is the best fit for you is one step forward toward hitting your goal.

You can find them by using the search button on your socials and hovering over their profiles.

Step 2: Studying their business, profile, or website — When you’ve found a great fit for your service, the next thing is to do a little underground study of their business, profile, or website.

The aim is to find voids that can be filled within the jurisdiction of your skillet. Find errors, techniques, or strategies that can be improved upon to get better results.

Step 3: Draft solutions — now that you’ve found a problem you can solve with your writing. It’s time to suggest your solution to your ICP for free. You might be thinking why should I give it all for free when I could charge for it? You’ll find why as you read on.

Step 4: Start a conversation — This is the best way to enter your ideal client’s DM [with a solution to a problem(s) you’ve observed].

Start by:

  • Giving salutation
  • Giving a simple compliment on their current project
  • Stating your observations
  • Stating how that is a problem
  • Stating any possible consequence
  • Stating your solution
  • Benefits of your solution — Paint a picture of the desired destination with them in the picture

E.g

“Hello Harold, — (salutation)

I love what you’re doing with the TAT Foundation. It’s amazing to know some people still care about out-of-school children. — (Compliment)

I thought to share this with you: going through your profile, I observed you barely create content.

This could be a little undoing as the success of any foundation depends on how loudly you amplify your message and get people to discover your hard work. — (problem)

Otherwise, you could be stuck here for years without getting funding. — (consequence)

I’ll write you viral content that’ll get you on the faces of potential sponsors and investors. — (your solution)

This would fast track your journey into getting more funding into your foundation and help you run it efficiently without running into deficit ever again”–(benefits of your solution. Vivid image of their transformation)

Step 5: Get on a call — At this point, your ideal client will barely say no to a solution to a glaring problem that has the potential of costing their business fortunes.

Or better put, a solution that has the potential of making their business more money or saving money or other benefits your solution brings.

Now, you’ve succeeded at grabbing their attention. It’s time to get them on a call if they’re willing to. If they’re not willing, spill all your solutions in the chat for free.

This increases the trust they have in you. It’s like if you could do this for free then there’s no telling what you’ll do if you were paid.

Whether they get interested in hiring you or simply say “thank you”, you’ve made your mark and you’ll remain in their heart for a long time. Even if they don’t hire you immediately, they’ll consider doing so when they need your service.

Wrapping It Up

Doing cold outreach can be a little uncomfortable due to the fear of imminent rejection. But you might never hit your target of getting hired if you don’t put yourself out there. And oh, you don’t have to worry much if you use the above strategy.

As a skilled person, you must get comfortable with sales. Don’t see yourself as a burden, see yourself as a solution to their problem (whether or not they know it). This will help increase your confidence when you go into their DMs.

If they’re not seeing things your way or don’t appreciate you, simply let them go. Then go on to the next, and then the next. It’s only a matter of time before you meet the one who values you and is willing to pay you huge bucks in exchange for your help.
