“Vegas 2017 here we go! It’s time to relax, vacation our butts off, and do absolutely nothing”

Vacations. Everyone loves them and everyone wishes they were on one right now instead of bitterly sipping on their coffee in their cubical. In this blog post, Muscle Milk bros and cardio bunnies, I will be rambling about my thoughts concerning both vacations and exercise. Should we continue to work out during our vacation time? Or should we just rest but suffer the consequence of the hotel buffet pounds later.

In my personal experiences of going on vacations with families, my dad ALWAYS made me go to the gym regardless of our vacation destination. Waking up at seven in the morning (on days during our vacation where I could have slept in instead) to go run on the treadmill and lift weights. During this time, I was competitively training at least fourteen hours a week due to playing travel softball. I had to train constantly in order to maintain my college softball offers. Therefore, because of this my father’s mentality for having me work out during our family vacations was to not only to ensure that I would consistently remain healthy, but that I would not loose pace with my fitness routine.

At the time I thought this was ridiculous. Being an athlete who works out 24/7 you get burnt out easily and the one thing you crave is having a couple of days to rest and do no physical activity of any kind. Being a naïve fifteen-year-old at the time I would reluctantly go to the gym on family vacations with my brother and dad solely because they wanted me to. But it wasn’t until after my career ending injury that I realized how smart my dad was to have me constantly train, even though I was constantly tired because this consistency was what made me the great softball player that I was. (I know that sounds like I’m bragging but you have to have that winner’s mentality to be the best, am I right Muscle Milk bros and cardio bunnies?)

So, in my eyes now I feel that it is good to exercise when you are on vacation. Does this mean that you have to go full out weights, cardio, leg day, etc.? If you want you can, but for me personally I try to keep my workouts on vacations as light and fun as possible. I mean it’s still a vacation after all?

Just as an example, when I would go to Palm Springs with my family during the summer I would go to the resort’s gym and work out a little bit of everything. I would do some cardio, legs, arms, and abs but I wouldn’t do anything that would leave me feeling sore and exhausted the next day. I feel that as long as you are doing some sort of activity during your vacation you are on the right track.

So, Muscle Milk bros and cardio bunnies, I would strongly recommend that you engage in any intrinsic type of physical activity that you enjoy doing on vacations because I feel that it will help to make your vacation more rewarding. But do not fret if you do not work out during your vacation because rest is always the number one factor in maintaining a healthy and happy mind and body.
