Ok. Back in the day it was supposed to be super lit. Like so lit that you needed sunglasses to go out kind of lit. Don’t get me wrong, now. I have a great time with my life and honestly couldn’t complain about my social circle and habits….but I’m about to complain…just a little… about how social media is affecting us. ALL OF US

1970’s Frat Party: You dress up in your toga theme, pregame with your girls/your boys/whatever gender binary and you head to the crazy fiesta. You get there. Upwards of 500 people there. Everyone is sloshed or just having a raging fun time. Keg stands, dancing, lights, music (without the noise complaint). It’s 2am, you aren’t getting lucky cuz you tired and you go home and feel GREAT the next day. It was the party of the century.

Today’s Party: You dress up in your toga theme, pregame with your homies and head to that party. You’re about a block away and it’s pretty quiet out aside from some muttering of drunkies walking across the street to the same party. You get there, guards at the door checking IDS…strike one. “It’s college, bi***.” No one is 21 except your late Juniors and Seniors. But thats not even that bad. It’s ok because all they have at these parties anyway are cheap, hangover infested booze. You go in, you’re feeling kind of tipsy…no wait actually like black out drunk. You don’t really remember the night until you see it…..

Your story

His story

Their stories

You may not remember your drunken mistakes but now the whole world can remember it for you, even if they weren’t even at the party to see it LIVE! You sloppily made out with blank….he/she has a girlfriend/boyfriend. You threw up on blank’s brand new prada purse. You got in a fist fight with a parapalegic. Yeah. I wouldn’t say this was your night. But unfortunately, that isn’t enough of a bad night to have these days. The cherry on top we are blessed with now is that all of your actions were now recorded and posted on social media for the world to see. Now its not just word of mouth….it’s real and people are going to form their judgements and opinions on you over one night of mistakes. Even if you deleted it a few hours later, the peanut gallery already saw it and is talking about it/screenshotted things to their friends and their friends’ friends.

Today [privacy] is a myth. With freedom of speech and today’s technology combined, we should all be living in fear of how much of ourselves we really get for ourselves. The surrounding world is constantly taking our privacy from us and forcing changes on society as a whole. Even if you didn’t have a crazy night like described, the fact that you were wearing a toga and a picture was taken of you and posted online is now on the cover of a news article claiming college students to be racist…etc. The constant need to show ourselves and our experiences online has replaced our freedom to have a good time or at least recover from a bad time.

So maybe you can help stop this issue and only post good things online. Don’t depricate someone else for the benefit of a good story or a lot of followers. Let’s go back to the 70’s. Let’s get lit!!!!
