Keeping Three Running Backs

The likelihood that a team keeps three running backs prior to the draft is rare. Of the 90 times (9 drafts, 10 teams) teams have made keeper selections, an organization has kept 3 RBs just four times — Andrews (2010), Waddles (2012), Eric (2015) and (2018).

Jerick McKinnon, who suffered a season-ending knee injury, was among one of three running backs kept by Julia’s Oral Roberts.

The number of times teams have kept zero RBs is six times. The organization owned by Lisa and now Don, kept no RBs for four straight drafts (2011–2014), then Phil did not keep a RB in 2015. Every team kept at least one RB in 2016, then Waddles did not keep a RB before the 2017 draft. The breakdown of RBs kept is as follows: 3 RBs (4), 2 RBs (44), 1 RB (36), 0 RBs (6).

Heading into the 2018 draft, Little Jerry had the chance to keep three top RBs but opted to trade Alvin Kamara in favor of keeping two running backs. Meanwhile, Julia’s Oral Roberts kept three RBs with Jerick McKinnon suffering a season-ending knee injury prior to the 2018 season.

Here are the results of the teams who kept three running backs:

2010: Andrews — Rashard Mendenhall (9th among RBs), Frank Gore (19th), DeAngelo Williams (61st, played only 6 games.) Team record: 6–7, missed playoffs.

2012: Waddles — Chris Johnson (13th), Darren Sproles (16th), Maurice Jones-Drew (50th, played 6 games.) Team record: 4–9, missed playoffs.

2015: Eric — Jamaal Charles (49th, played 5 games), Carlos Hyde (58th, played 7 games), Andre Ellington (67th). Team record: 5–8, missed playoffs.

The results have gotten worse each time a team keeps three RBs, and now that Julia’s Oral Roberts has incurred the McKinnon injury, there is little optimism their team is playoff bound.
