The CEO’s I work with the most fall into three varieties; those starting out, those falling behind, and those with whom I am looking to build a partnership. The former will quickly fall into one of the latter two groups, often sooner than they realize. It is all a matter of … feedback and perspective.

The Learning Organization Is Dead, Long Live The Learning Organization

Everyday I speak with academics and teachers. Two groups that seem to be moving in their own timeline. It is a slow motion dance that is both captivating and befuddling. Not to them… well most of them. It is really just a matter of… you get the point!

Recently, I read a few obituaries on the Learning Organization, it seems that many have declared it dead. Many doubt the value and practicality of plenty of other corporate and academic buzzwords. Others extoll their virtues and worship at their alters. Feedback and perspective.

The divide is defined by two terms; vision vs execution. Those that fall behind take them too seriously. Those that succeed recognize that both are just a matter of feedback and perspective.

Four communities, a myriad of technologies and buzzwords, actors moving at the speed of light or in agonizing slow-motion — but those that succeed all have one thing in common:

The Right Feedback & Perspective

They are learning. That is what it all comes down to. The best CEOs, VCs, PhDs, and DEds are all learning. They are not concerned with whether Bitcoin will be the cryptocurrency of choice of our new AI overlords. They could care less whether crowd-sourced content will create more or less Fake News in the Cloud. They may or may not own an Echo, a 3D Printer, or an iPhoneX.

“All of this has happened before and it will all happen again.”

The next big thing is just the last big thing with new branding. Human history is the story of speed and distribution of information. Everything else is just icing on the cake. All of this drives… feedback and perspective.

Let’s provide some tangible feedback using some visionary buzzwords, cutting through the hype, and drive some execution using a different perspective.

Crowd-Sourced: Why is this all the rage? Because two heads are better than one. If you want your organization to succeed, everyone needs to be learning.

Blockchain: It is a distributed ledger with transparency. It is the ultimate feedback tool in the hands of the masses. Does your organization have tools and solutions to distribute financial decisions while protecting security?

Deep Learning: Machine Learning meets human supervisors. What a great model for layering feedback into your organization! It comes with science, discipline, and a crowd-sourced rule book.

Big Data, Data Science, IoT: It is easier than ever to collect endless amounts of data. Transforming that into meaningful information and effective feedback takes discipline. Where is that discipline entering your organization?

Bitcoin, Uber, Alibaba, AirBnB, Facebook: Is the age of products at an end? All of these players own a product space, without any product. Success can come from doing it smarter, easier, faster… allowing others to work for you. You don’t need to own everything, just understand it.

Something interesting is happening. It is the next big thing. It was the last big thing. What are you doing to get the right feedback and perspective? Will you be among those who learn from the next iteration? Will your team? All this new technology, science, and innovation may slip into obscurity or revolutionize the world — that is more a matter of branding. At its heart is real discipline, principles, learning, and opportunity — it is all just a matter of feedback and perspective. Use it to your advantage!
