Unrequited

When I met you, I was awestruck; I admired your intellectual ways,
I wanted to grow that friendship and ride roller-coasters through space.

Our interests a carbon copy, our music always in sync,
I thought I’d met my best friend, or someone to share my memes,

We talked to each other for days, shared some very honest “deets”,
I expected at least a few years of friendship, not a few weeks.

I know you were going through hardships,
I know you were going through change,
I understand that you quit your job,
but I don’t understand this pain.

I don’t understand this wall,
I don’t want it defining you and me,
even if it’s a friendship it’s important,
a smile to break through the bleak.

You mean something to me,
you’re very dear to my heart,
but this unrequired care for you,
has torn it apart.

If we’ll never have our goodbyes,
at least please promise one thing.

You’ll always stay shy.
