With Artificial Intelligence (AI) reshaping education, the qualities that make teachers exceptional become important. Despite technological advancements, students continue to value certain timeless qualities in the teachers. Understanding these qualities that resonate with students is crucial to having a productive and engaging learning environment:

Empathy: In the educational journey, there is a deep connection between teachers and students, an element that AI cannot replicate. Anne Sullivan’s work with Helen Keller exemplifies the transformative power of empathy in education. While technology can provide tools for personalized learning, it is the teacher who recognizes and responds to the unique emotional and academic needs of each student. So, teachers must cultivate a deep sense of empathy, enabling them to connect with students on a personal level and make learning more accessible and impactful. This human touch, the ability to discern and react with sensitivity, remains indispensable in the digital age.

Adaptability: The use of AI demands that teachers be adaptable and open to embracing new technologies. Students appreciate and love teachers who effortlessly, and skillfully incorporate AI tools into their teaching, making lessons more interactive and personalized. Rabindranath Tagore’s holistic approach, integrating arts, nature, and culture in education, highlights the importance of adaptability and innovation. This adaptability not only keeps teaching relevant but also demonstrates to students the value of being flexible and open-minded in a constantly evolving digital world.

Lifelong Learning: In this era of continuous technological evolution, teachers who are lifelong learners themselves stand as powerful role models. Students recognise the commitment of teachers to updating their knowledge and understanding — leveraging AI in education. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s passion and continuous quest for knowledge serve as an inspiration. This quality inspires students to embrace a similar mindset — “Learning as an ongoing journey, not a destination.”

Effective Communication: The shift towards digital learning has not diminished the importance of effective communication. Teachers who excel in conveying concepts clearly across various digital platforms are highly valued. This skill ensures that the transition between traditional teaching methods and AI-powered tools is seamless and effective, facilitating better understanding and engagement among students. Chanakya’s wisdom and ability to convey complex ideas clearly exemplify a timeless teaching skill, relevant both in-person and virtually.

Creativity and Critical Thinking: With information available at a click, the teacher’s responsibility extends beyond simply imparting knowledge. Teachers who encourage critical thinking and creativity are particularly valued in the AI era. They help students sift through information, analyse it critically, and apply it creatively. This nurturing of higher-order thinking skills is something AI alone cannot achieve and is integral to preparing students for the challenges of the future. Dr. S Radhakrishnan’s approach, fostering intellectual and spiritual growth, underscores the importance of promoting critical thinking.

Patience: The virtue of patience, as exemplified by Swami Vivekananda, is crucial. With the diverse learning speeds and styles that AI can accommodate, teachers need the patience to guide each student through their individual learning journeys. Swami Vivekananda’s teachings and approach to education reflect this patience and perseverance, showing a deep commitment to nurturing each student’s unique path to knowledge and wisdom.

As we enter the digital world with AI, the qualities that distinguished historical teachers like Confucius and other notable teachers remain relevant and valuable today. The qualities students admire in teachers — understanding, adaptability, lifelong learning, effective communication, and the promotion of critical, creative thinking — gain new dimensions. These qualities, along with the innovative capabilities of AI, have the potential to transform the learning experience. Teachers who embody these qualities are guides, mentors, and inspirations, shaping the minds that lead the future. Teachers can empower students for a future where technology and humanity intersect…
