Champs Fam, we have a new addition to our regular editions — a game development update! Now that the closed beta has been out for its first spin, we’ll be sharing regular updates with the community about everything that’s going on under the hood.

Soon we’ll welcome back the closed beta and so much has changed since the first release. The first 24-hour stress test was a simple stripped-back version of the game. This development update covers everything that’s changed since then so you know what to expect when we bring back the closed beta Cosmic Champs game!

Bug Fixes

More than 688 games were played during the 24-hour test period of the closed beta, and 88 bug reports were submitted. When the closed beta comes back next week, bug reports will be open again and we appreciate your time telling us what you find.

Here’s a list of the bugs that we’ve fixed since version 1:

  • Fixed a bug where reconnecting to a game would refill your energy and reshuffle your cards.
  • Fixed a bug where incorrect “victory” was reported if the winner leaves the game prematurely.
  • Fixed a bug where deploying the “preview/next” card would crash the game.
  • Fixed a bug where a unit would perform an additional attack and damage nearest enemy after its current enemy was destroyed.
  • Fixed a visual bug where a unit would do an additional empty attack after enemy was destroyed.
  • Fixed a bug where in some cases the resync event of the energy bar indicator made the energy bar “decrease”. (It is still possible for this to occur, but only in severe high-latency situations).
  • Fixed a bug where in some cases projectiles hit friendly units or incorrect targets.
  • Fixed a bug where wallet would show as disconnected after leaving the battle.

The new release

Whilst the closed beta game has been offline, we’ve been making some important changes. Here’s a list of functional changes that we’ve added to enhance player experience in the next version.

  • Introduced Tertius army
  • App now notifies users when an update is available or when an update is mandatory.
  • User account creation form and user login form validation messaging improved.
  • Global mute sounds button added.
  • Your email is now masked on the lobby screen.
  • Changed matchmaking text to “Searching for an opponent” for more clarity.
  • Matchmaking will now prioritize lower latency users to match with first and then gradually loosen the criteria.
  • Opponent left scenario is now properly communicated.
  • Temporarily removed the “Quit” button from the battle UI, it will get replaced with a “forfeit” button in a future update.
  • Preview of the next card in the queue now includes word “next” above it for better understanding of the battle UI.
  • Significantly decreased the delay between unit attacking and damage registering on the target (hp bar change).
  • Reduced “idle” time units need to re-path (start moving again) after destroying their enemy.

To make gameplay more consistent and fair, we’ve also added some balancing features.

  • Main Base attack rate decreased.
  • Cybi attack range decreased.
  • Temporarily decreased Trig’s energy cost to compensate for not yet implemented multi-attack.

What’s next?

Wen beta? — We are planning to reopen the closed beta in the second half of the next week. Once online again, we plan to keep it online until further notice. We’ll let you know the exact time frame next week!

Wen iOS? — We still need to fix a few known bugs that pester the Android app (list of known bugs: https://beta.cosmicchamps.com/bug. Until then you can use the unofficial method to play the game via your desktop device.

Wen nfts? — Over following weeks we’ll roll out updates that will bring your NFT champs into the game. The order of unlocking them will be from the lowest rarity and up, to have the most common/used skins tested first. We will provide more specific details about the exact rollout shortly.

Wat else?

We are working on bringing Season 2 (non-NFT) champs into the game, to give you all more variety and freedom in planning the ultimate strategy.

  • The UI will also be undergoing a major overhaul to support rolling out new features — the first one to look out for in short-term is deck editor which is an essential feature that will allow for different base champs and NFT skins to be used in-game. The UI for it is mostly finished pending implementation and testing.
  • Based on your feedback we are revamping the battle arena shape a little, mainly to prevent some issues with stuck units at the narrow parts and to maximise useful battlefield area. Additionally, we are already creating a second battle arena that will make things more interesting.
