The hot summer days are over, and now you might feel like making some nice excursions again. Why not enjoy the neighbouring Algarve, spending some days in this southernmost part of Portugal?

Portugal´s most popular touristic destination with an area of almost 5000 square kilometers and about 450,000 inhabitants has a lot to offer.

The Algarve is a region in the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula with the Cabo de Sao Vicente near Sagres being the most southwesterly point of Europe. Breathtaking cliffs and a lighthouse dominate this place, also called ´land´s end´. Don´t forget to have a look at the ´cliff fishers´: brave and somehow crazy anglers who practice abseiling from the cliffs in order to catch fish with their immensely large fishing rod.

The Algarve coastline with a length of approximately 155 km is famous for picturesque limestone caves and grottoes, which are only accessible by boat. You find them particularly around Lagos.

One of them is the ´Ponta de Piedade´, one of the most spectacular attractions of Portugal and the most beautiful rock formation of the Algarve. Above the rocks there is a lighthouse overlooking the area — serving as popular destination for hikers. The landscape is marked by formations, tunnels and gates made of this red-yellow rock, washed out of the rock over thousands of years.

On the way back to Portimao you may enjoy beautiful views over amazingly rocky scenery when passing old ramparts and the famous “Fortaleza de Sagres”. The Fortress of Sagres is closely connected with the history of one of Portugal’s most famous figures, Infante D. Henrique or Prince Henry the Navigator, who who built Fortaleza de Sagres in the fifteenth century as well as the famous nearby school of navigators. In the eighteenth century, the fortress underwent renovations, the results of which can be seen today. Amongst the things to see at Fortaleza de Sagres are its barracks and related buildings and its famous wind compass.
