Five more life drawings of mature men
As I mentioned in my previous collection of drawings of older male models, they are probably my favourite demographic to draw. Don’t misunderstand, I enjoy all models — females, young and old as well as younger males, and I always feel privileged to have the opportunity to draw them. But there is something more in tune with my drawing style that works with an older male. Maybe it’s an affinity, I am an older male myself, but I think it is more to do with the ease with which they pose, and the way their bodies fall into their natural posture. I also don’t feel as beholden to flatter, which is a failing of my upbringing perhaps. Looking back over my extensive library of drawings beginning in the early eighties, I am struck with how relatively few older men I’ve actually drawn, so the rarity might also be a factor in this.

I’d scanned and posted this on Instagram six years ago and promptly forgotten it. I guess I hadn’t appreciated it in the company of other drawings from that period, which I thought better. Then, late last year, I was asked to teach a life drawing masterclass for the RCA in north Wales…
