I did what I could to never see the doctor.
Then, in my early 30s, I went to the gym six days a week, I ate right, I didn’t smoke, and I rarely drank. I was healthy. Spending a childhood watching my obese grandfather who didn’t lose weight until Parkinson’s stepped in, and my overweight dad who died before he could become obese (though not from anything weight-related, so I guess he beat the system in that regard), I didn’t want to follow in their footsteps.
But maybe more importantly, I simply couldn’t afford it. Visits to the doctor were pricey, and pricey health insurance didn’t cut down on expenses all that much either. So, I did what so many other people in the southern United States do for their healthcare.
I went to Mexico.
Living in Tucson, driving to the border town of Nogales took less than an hour. Crossing over, visitors are immediately surrounded by dental offices, pharmacies, and other medical service providers.
