Counter Arts’ Film Prompt: Pride 2025
In celebration of pride month, let’s discuss what queer cinema has to offer!
With pride month upon us, there is no better time to discuss the wonderful cinema (or television — I often leave TV out because of my personal prioritisation of film, but we do discuss TV too!) that either revolves around LGBTQ+ characters or was created by queer artists.
In Pride month 2022, before I was an editor for Counter Arts, I discussed a series of LGBTQ+ films I then considered essentials. With effort made to include a wide variety of films in order to highlight the breadth of queer cinema, I brought up everything from the recent mainstream hits of Barry Jenkins’ masterpiece Moonlight and Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of Andre Aciman’s novel Call Me By Your Name all the way through to the films of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Ettore Scola and Isaac Julien.
