I have been watching Doctor Who as man and boy for 50+ years now and have watched as my (now adult) children also watched the show. In the early ‘80s, the show became almost unwatchable with Sylvester McCoy unable to change the writing on the wall as the show self-destructed into pantomime and self-reflexive sardonic inanity. He tried but failed and it went into the Wilderness Years like Winston Churchill.

However, such an iconic character who had been part of everyone’s childhood could not be left to languish in the BBC vaults and on video for too long, and slowly but surely the show regenerated into a new iteration for modernity. Christopher Ecclestone took on the role and with terrific storylines and solid support from Billie Piper (Rose) brought the Whoniverse triumphantly into our living rooms again.
