FCC Attempts To Stop Robocalls: Will The Phone Scams Ever End?
How many times a week do people receive annoying robocalls? Where are they coming from? Are you like this person in the picture that looks at their phone with a puzzled look, wondering why you’re receiving a call from an unknown number? Robocalls have become so frequent, that programmers of automated voice calls have made it their mission to bug and annoy others who just want to go about their day without being solicited 24/7. It definitely makes me wonder what agencies like the FCC are doing about this.
The FCC has recently stated its efforts to mitigate the frequency of robocalls by implementing a new set of industry rules called STIR/SHAKEN. This essentially requires voice service providers to adopt strict caller ID authentication standards. The big name carriers such as AT&T, Verizion Wireless, and T-Mobile were also required to implement these standards by June 30th.
In addition, voice service providers must provide an action plan detailing what their own mitigation efforts will be in the FCC’s recently launched database. If a plan was not submitted in the database by Sept 28th, The FCC would force phone carriers to stop accepting calls from the providers.
