When ‘Furiosa’ directed and produced by George Miller, who wrote the screenplay with Nico Lathouris, was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in early May it was given a 7-minute standing ovation. That seemed pretty impressive to me but after reading some reviews of the film by established critics and comments by ordinary filmgoers it appears that the film divides opinion in a fairly straightforward split: critics love the movie and the punters in the cinema were not that impressed.

For me, it is a masterpiece and I do not use that title lightly for the fifth instalment in the Mad Max franchise, which acts as both a prequel and spin-off to Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). I will explain my opinion and suggest why the ticket-paying public has been less…
