What is art? To some, it is human expression, as shown in paintings, music, and film. To others, it is a form of entertainment — something to enjoy passively but not necessarily seriously. Sometimes it has meaning. Sometimes it has none. But one thing stays the same: it is made by and for humans.

At least, it used to be.

AI-generated art is a relatively new concept in the art world and is still underdeveloped as tech companies strive to combine human art styles and techniques with technology’s speed. By collecting information from across the internet, AI generators are expected to learn how to create a new picture from prompts.

As someone who loves to create art but lacks skill, I thought I would try AI and see whether it could help me make something new. I spent one month using the AI art generator, Midjourney. The results surpassed my expectations and opened a window into AI’s greatest strengths and weaknesses.
