According to the calendar and the time the sun remains within sight on this side of the planet, we have shifted from summer to autumn. And according to custom, by the day after the long Labor Day holiday weekend, we have already shifted.

Except, the shift hasn’t really happened yet.

Look around our backyard, aka Central Park, and you’re not seeing anything but green. And that will continue to be the case for another month, easily.

I’ve now lived in New York City long enough to remember when leaves did start to change color by mid to late September, although the accumulated heat of the city kept them greener longer than those of the wild trees out in the countryside.

Now September and even early October are confused.

It’s not summer anymore (witness the fact that I go through and close all the windows at night…
