Shelfie Prompt
I was super excited when I saw Will Hull ‘s and Squeeze the Avocado ‘s shelfie prompt articles. It’s wonderful to see fellow bibliophiles’ collections and I’d love to share mine with you here.
Books are my absolute passion and… weakness. I just can’t resist their multifaceted allure. I love reading, collecting (*ahem, hoarding), and making them. I hardly ever splurge on luxuries like new clothes, fancy electronics, or restaurants BUT I am happy to spend my spare cash on books because my mind justifies these purchases not as a superfluous expense, but a necessity like toothpaste and groceries.
I love to read non-fiction and can highly recommend anything written by the great Oliver Sacks- a neurologist who wrote about the many unusual patients he encountered over his lifetime treating sufferers of quirky neurological afflictions. He wrote empathetically and kindly about his subjects, and the language he used was always incredibly informative and accessible.
Another branch of my passion- antique books. Did I mention I love books? Whenever I travel somewhere, I tend to pick up a piece of history in the form of beautifully bound bundles of dead trees. I say dead, but the life within these pages is a marvel of human evolution- small sequentially strung-together characters which we have learned to translate into pictures and moving images within our minds.
My favorite and one of the oldest books I have is a religious text I picked up while working at the rare book section of the Strand bookshop in NYC. I only worked there briefly which was probably for the better since I was broke but surrounded by constant temptation. That wasn’t the only time extremely convenient proximity to books inconvenienced my pockets… When I lived in Minneapolis, my bank was right next to a rare book shop downtown and when I cashed checks from work, I had to pass by and fight to resist its powerful magnetic force…
Anyway, back to my bookshelf. Old books, non-fiction books, and art + photography books make up the bulk of my collection. Here’s one more shelfie for ya….
The inspiration :) :
