The Modern Broken Heart

Some damage is too great to repair

My mother died a few years ago while in a coma brought about by open heart surgery. Her cause of death was cardiac arrest, with her chest cut wide open to relieve post-surgery pressure, heart bared to the world. She had been hospitalized just before Thanksgiving. She was 59. Her father, who she never met, died similarly at 51.
