The Saddest Songs Ever Recorded
And why they make me happy
Throughout modern music history, there have been countless songs written that are meant to hit us right in the feelings. However, some of these tunes don’t make me sad because of the music or lyrics — but rather because they’re a rather poor attempt at evoking the emotion they’re meant to.
Some others nail it.
While you can easily ask your streaming music app for “sad songs”, they don’t always serve up the best of choices. For example, when I ask Youtube Music for a “sad bangers” playlist, it gives me pop songs that are supposed to somehow make us feel melancholy.
As examples, the playlist includes Miley Cyrus, Elton John, The Weeknd, Halsey, and Sam Smith, none which evoke darkness for me.
When I think of sad songs, I think of music that sends a chilly, late September breeze straight through my soul. I think of songs that make me recall vague black and white flashbacks with my late brother. I think of songs that could put their arms around me while I drink alone in my living room.
To me, there are many tunes that try to make you feel sad, but they fall short. They lack the necessary soul that’s required to drag my own soul into their world. For me, it can’t be lyrics about a breakup to some boppy beat. I want to be…
