The Wheel Turns and Another New Year Begins

A brief summary of 2024 and some thoughts on entering 2025

I’m writing this piece during the couple of days before a new year begins. A strange time of year, like a held breath, a silent pause, on the cusp of explosive celebrations which erupt upon the very eve and rise to a tumultuous climax at the stroke of twelve, at midnight… zero zero : zero zero… the end and the beginning, simultaneous.

But not yet, and here, betwixt and between, I find myself suspended. Looking both backward and forward, taking stock of what this last year was and what the next might bring.

In 2024, the Counter Arts publication has gone from strength to strength.

  • We were included in the boost-nomination-pilot in June of 2023, and have continued throughout 2024 to have many exceptionally engaging pieces of work boosted, increasing readership and financial reward for many wonderful writers.
  • The number of people following (and hopefully reading from) the publication currently sits at 22.5k, and we have added some fabulous new writers to our list.
  • Quite a few of our ‘old favourites’ are still around as well — as indeed are old founders, Carlos Garbiras and Will Hull pop in occasionally, and our favourite avocado Jess is back to…
