Think back to all the moments we took a step toward racial equality.

Let’s look at the US presidential campaigns.

While Jesse Jackson was on the run several years ago to become the first black president, it was all the way in 2008 that the historical moment really took place.

R. Radhakrishnan discusses in his book Between Identity and Location how moments like the Jesse Jackson election campaign were regressive for the racial equality movement.

The press was unable to fathom that an American could be African-American or vice-versa. Radhakrishnan further comments that the question “What does Jesse want?” was even more preposterous as it was not asked of any other candidate.

The Rainbow Coalition

The media was unable to understand the popularity of the Rainbow Coalition:

That a coalition made up of blacks, Hispanics, Chicanos, immigrants of various color, feminists, civil rights activists, left-wing intellectuals, lesbians, gays, and several others who have experienced the pain and the hurt could be politically viable was a nightmarish thought to the dominant mainstream. —…
