#MeToo #YesAllWomen #Fem2…

Hashtags have been used as one of the many ways to endorse feminism. #MeToo was started by Activist Tarana Burke back in 2006, but came into the spotlight when actress Alyssa Milano used it in 2017. The “MeToo” movement was started to encourage women(not men)to show solidarity with one another, specifically when it comes to sexual harassment. On the other hand, men experience sexual assault and sexual harassment as well. Is it fair to exclude them from the #MeToo movement for the sake of Feminism?

Feminism is the advocacy of women’s rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.

Feminism isn’t just expressed through movements or hashtags to unify women. We have seen feminism as far back as the second grade when we were expected to write Real Women’s essays(in which students choose an inspirational woman to write about & state how they themselves were inspired by the women of their choosing).

As a child, I wanted the opportunity to write my essay on Real Men; such as Physicist Stephen Hawking, Computer Scientist and Mathematician Alan Turing (who broke the unbreakable Nazi code), and singer/songwriter Ritchie Valens. Students should be able to write about whoever is inspirational to them regardless of gender. Men in history and today deserve the opportunity to be recognized for their accomplishments as well as women.

I believe that this long term feminist movement is dehumanizing men, making them “not as important” as the women in today’s day and age. To support my statement, we can look at the Oscars. When a large sum of men are nominated for the Oscars and Grammy, people are quick to say that it’s preposterous and sexist even if they deserve the recognition. Yet if we the switch the roles, its “females at their finest”.

This Feminist movement needs to become this “Equality Empowerment”. We need to unite with men and, together, fight for equality through communication and unification, and not through shaming our counter gender.
