How to Make Homemade Cinnamon Rolls
Waking up to the sweet smell of cinnamon floating into your room might be the best thing to wake up to on Christmas morning. Once you walk into the kitchen, there, on top of the counter is a fresh batch of cinnamon rolls, waiting for you to devour them. So, here is how the magic happens:
First you make the dough:
- 2 packages yeast (4 1/2 teaspoons), dissolved in 1 cup lukewarm water
- 6 tablespoons shortening (Crisco)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 8 cups unbleached all-purpose flour (you might need more if the dough is sticky, up to 9–10 cups)
- 2 cups hot water
- 2 eggs, beaten
- 1 tablespoon salt
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Dissolve yeast, warm water and sugar in a separate bowl. In a mixing bowl, add the shortening, sugar, and salt to the hot water and use a paddle beater to mix it.
- Let it cool and add the 2 cups of flour and mix till smooth. Mix in the beaten eggs.
- Switch the paddle into a dough hook and gradually add the remaining flour into the bowl.
- Make sure you have extra flour with you because you’ll need it for the next step.
- Put flour all over your work station and lightly knead flour into the dough. The dough should have enough flour so that it wouldn’t be that sticky.
- Take a bowl big enough for the dough to fit. Flour the bottom and the sides of the bowl. Then put the dough in the bowl and sprinkle some flour on top. Cover the bowl airtight with a plastic seal and set it aside for it to rise for a 30 minutes.
- Once the dough rises, take it out and roll it evenly into a rectangular shape. Then we’ll start on the filling.
Next is the filling of the cinnamon rolls:
- Softened butter (about 1 cup total)
- Brown sugar (about 2 cups total)
- Cinnamon (about 2 tablespoons total)
For the filling, you don’t have to be strict with the measurements. As long as the filling is creamy and you are in love with the taste, then it’s perfect.
In a bowl, mix all of these ingredients together and you should have a rich creamy filling.
- Once the filling is done, spread it across the rectangular dough.
- When finished, roll each dough into one long roll.
- Cut the rolls about two inches thick.
- Place the rolls in a greased baking pan and into a preheated oven. Bake for 20–30 minutes. When the middle part of the buns aren’t doughy, they’re ready to be taken out. Let the rolls cool to room temperature.
- While they cool, it’s time to make the frosting.
Frosting for the rolls:
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 4 tablespoons milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Whisk together all the ingredients together in one bowl.
- Frost the rolls generously and ENJOY!
