Selecting Proper Box Size / Measuring Dimensions
Ever wondered, why dimensions (Length, Width and Height) are written on every item you purchase from any e-commerce website such as Flipkart, Amazon or Myntra irrespective it is a t-shirt or a 52” inch LED TV.
The reason is volumetric weight. Didn’t get what is volumetric weight, don’t worry let us explain about it. In courier industry, there are two types of weight , after which rates are computed for users / senders / customer for sending packet / doing courier from Place A to Place B and that is; Actual weight or volumetric weight.
Volumetric weight is computed by multiplying Length * Width * Height / 4000, 4500, 5000, 6000. This divisor 4500, 5000 or 6,000 does vary from courier partner to courier partner.
Courier charges are applicable as per weight slabs and higher of Actual weight or Volumetric weight. Let’s take an example to understand the difference and applicability of both weight and how do they play role in courier industry.
Usually, in courier Industry weight slabs are of 500gm. Let’s take for e.g. FedEx charges Rs. 50/500gm within city and new 500gm with the same rate and divisor is 4,000.
Case 1
You are shipping a pen whose weight is hardly 50gm, and you packed pen in a small box whose dimensions are 10*10*10cm.
So, your vol. weight would be 10*10*10/4000 = 0.25kg that is 250 gm coming in 500gm slab rate.
Actual weight is 50 gm, so weight charges by courier industry is Rs.50 for 500gm.
Case 2
In case 2nd, you are shipping same pen whose weight is 50gm by FedEx only but this time you had packed it into a very large box whose dimensions are 25*20*20.
So, now volumetric weight would be 25*20*20/4000 = 2.5kg
As you can see, pen is same which is of 50 gm but due to large size packaging, volumetric weight is 2.5kg, so courier company will charge for 2.5kg, which is 2.5 = Rs. 250. Loss of Rs. 200 just because of improper packaging.
This is why packaging matter a lot in courier industry, compact the packaging, higher the saving.
