The championship round of BI Madness is quickly approaching and quite honestly — it is looking like another rematch between Qlik and Tableau. About a week back, I wrote an article asking if those two solutions were just that good? We got quite a few comments — especially on Quora. Though I do believe the jury is still out.

More recently I found this offering from IT central:

You don’t really need to buy the reports. A quick review of the page is pretty telling. Perhaps these products just aren’t that good.

Domo is Over-hyped

I am not talking about the company valuation, although plenty of folks are. It is just that Domo seems to be everywhere, the business intelligence tool and the little brown monster. I am fairly sure they have nothing else in common beyond their pervasiveness.

Domopoloosa… Snoop Dogg…these guys are self-promo wizards. But would all that effort be better invested back in the product? There are complaints about glitches, calculation issues, and scaling. User complain about inefficiency in working the data structures. Surely this is better place to put some money than having Flo Rida play at your conference? Maybe not, I heard he and Snoop put on some great shows.

The company’s site has recent accolades from 2015. Their list of consulting partners is twice as long as their list of clients. Full disclosure, I actually voted for Domo over Tableau. Perhaps now that Domopoloosa has ended, their supporter will rise to the occasion. Or perhaps Domo is all show…?

Business Objects Is A Dinosaur

With all due respect for Timo Elliot and his Gartner story, business intelligence is far from dead. But a lot of transformation has occurred in the last few decades and Bobj has witnessed all of them. The original company was founded in 1990. That goes back to C before it had +’s or #’s. That is pre-cell phone, pre-internet, and even pre-email.

Sure the platform has been re-engineered. It was Crystal Reports… or is it still? Then BObj… or BO? Now Lumira… actually 2.0. Wait isn’t that a band? Hold on… how many products do they have again? Oh, Bobj is Lumira… 2.0. Was there a 1.0? Yes, yes there was… who else is confused? After nearly 30 years of existence, SAP seems lost.

This article tries to compare their main offerings. Truth be told, it seems a bit confused, too.

Perhaps SAP’s BO fans are just waiting to make an 11th hour bid for the championship? Or perhaps they got distracted by a Lumineers concert at the senior center. Ouch, what did the Lumineers do to deserve that jab? Absolutely nothing… but Business Objects is old and its many rebrandings only make it look all the older. Did really try Desktop Intelligence? Yes — and no, not back in the 90's.

Are you a fan of Domo or SAP? They need your help! Go to the article below and vote for them before it’s too late!
