16 Takes From Practice to Competition, Strategy to Visualization, History and Today
Over the last few years, we have had a lot to say about sports and athletics. Some might find this odd for a publishing group aimed at analytics and decision making, but others would absolutely expect it. Analytics has made huge in-roads into professional and college sports. Former colleagues of mine now title themselves performance analysts and spend hours on the athletic field each week. But few of our articles have really broached that topic.
We prefer to write about sports for other reasons. We love analogies and sports offers some great ones. We love competition (stop hissing! — you know who you are). It is a fertile testing ground for strategy, tactics, and the like with heavy amounts of transparency and quick turnover (games are under 4 hours in almost every sport and seasons less than 6 months). And honestly, they are just more approachable and immediately interesting (emphasis on immediately) than analytics or business.
