What is project based learning?
Simply put, project based learning or PBL requires you to work on a project from what you learn during a course. It helps you thoroughly understand what you are learning because you are implementing it. It helps develop skills to be productive from acquired knowledge.
Formal definition — Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging, and complex question, problem, or challenge.
Where does it matter?
Courses like programming, designing, marketing, etc. taught in schools and colleges rarely require you to work on a real world project. This creates a gap between knowledge and skill. Without putting your knowledge on a subject into practice how can you claim you have skills ready to tackle the real world.
It’s like learning to ride a bike, but Imagine if somebody taught you how a bike works and how it’s operated. Can you be confident enough to do a stunt on it without trying it first? Of course you’ll fall if you do that. That’s why we start with a cycle first. Think of project based learning as the cycle and a job as the bike.
Many students are unprepared for the challenges of the modern industry. Project based learning helps solve that. Learning a course by actually putting what you learn into action is the most effective way to learn. It prepares you for the real world. That’s the reason experience has more value than degrees. In the real world skill has more value than knowledge. A person who can show a project they did, will get chosen over a person with no projects even if they have better marks and is from a bigger college.
Employers are least bothered where you are from or how good your marks were. They want to know what you can do for the company and how much of an asset you can be to the company. Employers need positive results they would never risk hiring a half skilled candidate.
Employers will prefer candidates who need little or no training. Training or skill building after joining takes time away from productivity.
Learning a course with PBL prepares you for the tasks you will encounter as a working professional. It also helps you solve real world problems or a complex question.
In PBL students have to express their knowledge and skill by developing a public product or presentation for a real audience. As a result, students develop deep content knowledge as well as critical thinking, creativity, and communication skills in the context of doing an authentic, meaningful project.
The consequences of a mistake are far more as a working professional. Everybody makes mistakes. People who have made the most usually have learnt the most. There would be no consequences faced while making mistakes while learning as you are expected to make mistakes, so that you can sort it out before you move on to a serious work environment. So make sure you correct your mistakes before you complete academics.
Learning by doing will have a clear positive impact on confidence. You will get the confidence to do, as you are not doing something you haven’t done before. Confidence helps you use your skill and knowledge to the best of your capability.
Project based learning will help you develop almost every skill you are expected to have in a real world work environment. Project based learning is probably the best way a fresher or a student with no experience can develop skills to move into a productive work environment.
